The Modern Man and Aesthetic Treatments

A noticeable shift is occurring in aesthetic medicine as more men have been seeking nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. Their goals most commonly are to soften expression lines, improve skin quality, and enhance masculine features while addressing early signs of aging. The term “Brotox” has even emerged to describe Botox for men, highlighting how common and accepted these treatments have become. Overall, the popularity of male aesthetic procedures has surged by more than 70% since 2021, with millions of nonsurgical treatments like Botox and fillers performed on men in recent years.1

Most men who come into the office say they want to look less tired or stressed and emphasize that they do not want to look different, they simply want to look like a better version of themselves. Cultural norms have evolved, and the aesthetic industry has shifted toward natural, refreshed results rather than an obviously “done” appearance. A desire to stay current, increased awareness of preventative care, and pressure within professional environments may all contribute to this trend. The common theme is subtle enhancement instead of dramatic change.

When searching for a practitioner, it is important to choose someone who understands the differences between male and female facial aesthetics. For example, men typically have stronger, straighter brows, while women’s brows tend to be more arched, a critical distinction when treating with neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport. Men also tend to have a flatter, broader midface with less lateral projection, whereas women’s cheeks are more angular with higher and more prominent lateral cheekbones. Understanding these differences is essential when placing fillers or biostimulators to maintain natural proportions. Among other distinctions, men also generally have a more defined jawline and a wider, more prominent chin compared to women. The goal of treatment is to enhance masculine features while avoiding unintended softening, making it crucial that the injector tailors their approach to these anatomical differences.

For softening expression lines in the forehead, glabella, and crow’s feet, neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport remain the most commonly chosen nonsurgical treatments. The goal is to reduce wrinkles while maintaining natural movement rather than “freezing” the face. Men often require slightly different injection placement and sometimes higher doses than women to achieve balanced, masculine results.

Dermal fillers and biostimulators like Sculptra are commonly used for men to enhance the jawline and chin, strengthening the overall lower-face structure and emphasizing masculine features. Many men are also focused on aging gracefully, and biostimulators like Sculptra are often used to subtly restore volume and stimulate collagen over time throughout the face for a natural, refreshed appearance.

At home, men are incorporating daily skincare routines with medical grade skincare to maintain and enhance results. Simplicity is key, with the most important steps being a daily SPF, moisturizer, and a retinol to protect and improve skin health. Even a simple, consistent routine can have a significant impact, reinforcing the results achieved through professional aesthetic treatments.

As cultural norms evolve, more men are prioritizing subtle enhancement, preventative care, and simple skincare routines. Once considered a female domain, aesthetic treatments are now increasingly valued by men as part of a modern approach to aging gracefully while maintaining a confident, professional appearance.
